Guillermo del Toro – Film Director ProfileFilmography and Biography of Award Winning Mexican Director
Guillermo del Toro wrote/directed the foreign film Pan's Labyrinth, picking up pretty much every award going in the process. He's also set to direct the new Hobbit films.
Guillermo del Toro was born on October 9th 1964, in Guadalajara, capital of the Mexican state Jalisco. His first big break in film directing came with the Spanish language horror flick Cronos, a film so successful that Hollywood was tempted to come calling. Unfortunately, del Toro's first all American movie, the much maligned Mimic, provided a somewhat faltering start. Del Toro was disheartened by studio interference, and remains dismissive about the final film, but it certainly hasn't deterred him. Speaking recently about his decision to take on big movies such as the forthcoming Hobbit films (in Empire magazine, July 2008 issue), he said: “ ...I've always made my bets based on my instincts. I am fallible and willing to be wrong. Mimic was a bet that went terribly wrong and took away four years of my life, but that should not prevent me from following my instinct.” After Mimic, Del Toro went on to direct Wesley Snipes in Blade II. The sequel was well received, but Del Toro turned down the chance to direct the third picture Blade:Trinity, preferring to concentrate on his pet project Hellboy. A decision that appears to be panning out quite well for him. Although Hellboy was no mega blockbuster, it was reasonably successful, and its reputation as a cool twist on the superhero genre has continued to grow through word of mouth. Del Toro has been able to return to Hellboy for a bigger, better, more eagerly anticipated sequel. Filmography.
Del Toro's Friends and RegularsDel Toro regularly works with certain actors, who can be seen populating various roles in his films. Ron Perlman and Doug Jones feature together in the Hellboy films and separately in Blade II and Cronos (Perlman), Pan's Labyrinth and Mimic (Jones). Del Toro fought hard for Perlman to be allowed to inhabit the role of Hellboy. The studio would have preferred a bigger name, but del Toro knew Perlman was perfect for the part. Del Toro also regularly works with cinematographer Guillermo Navarro. Del Toro also retains close links with fellow Mexican film-makers Alfonso Cuaron (Y Tu Mama Combien, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, City of Men) and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Babel). Future ProjectsGuillermo del Toro has also been handpicked by Peter Jackson to direct two Hobbit films, slated for release circa 2011 and 2012. Prior to them, he has been announced as the director attached to the new marvel comic superhero film Doctor Strange.
